Research and Development (R&D)
Introducing state-of-the-art technology and educational curriculum in academic institutions is pivotal for the social, cultural and economic development of nations. The ISTEC R&D initiative provides a vehicle for performing cutting edge research and development in a variety of disciplines. To achieve excellence, ISTEC, in collaboration with its partners, supports the transfer of technology to develop R&D labs to enhance interaction between industry and academia in order to foster innovation, creativity and collaboration. Therefore, this initiative improves the ability for the latest technology to be applied to the resolution of problems in a variety of areas and encourages the development of solutions that have regional and local social and economic impact.

ISTEC Creates Two Academic Training Centers in 2010
Through the Professional Development Series (SDP) under the R&D Initiative, ISTEC has created two Academic Training Centers. These centers will receive a donation of Spartan-3E development boards to create or update a laboratory on FPGAs and will work with ISTEC to build important training workshops for the use of this technology. The ISTEC academic members chosen for this honor are:
- Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), Ecuador
Director: Ing. Jorge Luis Jaramillo - Pontifia Universidad Javeriana – Cali (PUJ), Colombia
Director: Camilo Rueda Calderon
Each of these centers will hold an Academic Training Workshop during this year. The first was UTPL with a workshop in July 2010, and second will be PUJ with a workshop in December 2010.
UTPL hopes that the training provided through their center will allow the University the opportunity to give back to their community through development of innovative technological applications and the efficient management of collaborative networks. For PUJ this center will be an opportunity to train local engineers in the use of emerging technologies, the adoption of which will promote the growth of industry in Colombia. It will also assist in the synchronization of efforts made by research groups throughout the region through the development of effective communication networks.
These expectations are directly in line with the goals of this project:
- To create international workshops that will foster excellence within the region.
- To create synergies within the scientific communities of the region.
We look forward to the innovations these centers will create and will provide more information about workshop attendance in the near future.
