ISTEC Welcomes “Banco de la República” and “Luis-Ángel Arango” Library
Banco de la República of Colombia has joined ISTEC as a Collaborator and will be actively participating in the ISTEC LibLink Initiative through its Luis-Ángel Arango Library.
“Banco de la República” is the Central Bank of Colombia created in 1923. Besides its regulatory and financial role, the Bank also promotes the scientific, technological, cultural and social development in Colombia. Through three Foundations “Banco de la República” actively supports research on science, technology, education, health, humanities, and the preservation of archaeological sites.
In the area of education it has not only created scholarships for Colombian citizens to pursue doctoral studies abroad, but also created the Luis-Ángel Arango Library.
The Luis-Ángel Arango Library is the main public library in Colombia. It has over 800,000 volumes, receives an average of 3.1 million visitors every year and provides services to 1.5 million users through its virtual library.
In addition, the Library manages 12 library branches and also 12 documentation and cultural centers across Colombia. It serves as a research, heritage and public library. Its collections include not only academic materials and of general interest, but also historic valuable documents.
The incorporation of “Banco de la República” and the Luis-Ángel Arango Library represents tremendous additions to the ISTEC membership. We look forward to the new opportunities and collaborations that they will bring to the Consortium.
