Workshop on Digital Libraries

Alburquerque,
New Mexico, USA
July 7-9, 1999.

Purpose: This Free Workshop aims to bring together United States and Mexican Digital Library Researchers to exchange ideas, and particularly to FOSTER JOINT GRANT WRITING ACTIVITIES.

Contents
Digital Libraries have been identified in various countries as a national challenge and an area with potentially wide impact on their citizens' well-being. Ambitious programs have been launched by different entities with the aim to produce dramatic advances in areas that may impact the rapid development of Digital Libraries.

The National Science Foundation and el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, in conjunction with ISTEC seek to provide a forum for Mexican and United States representatives to share information on Digital Library Initiatives.

Mexican Digital Library Program.

Overview of Program
In the United States, the Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI), started in 1994 and now in its second phase, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Many other related projects and programs have been started in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

In México, interest in Digital Libraries has also been increasing. Work in areas related to Digital Libraries has been conducted in higher education institutions and research centers. However, only recently has the research community started to develop a National Digital Libraries Program, intended to bring researchers together and coordinate efforts in the area.

The main objectives of this workshop are:

  • to allow Mexican researchers to obtain first-hand insight of the experiences of U.S. researchers in the development of Digital Libraries projects;
  • provide a forum for the discussion of the Mexican National Digital Libraries Program in the light of experiences with related projects; and
  • to explore cooperation and collaboration opportunities among U.S. and Mexican institutions in the area of Digital Libraries.

    Format of the Workshop:
To allow for a rich interaction, participation in the workshop will be limited to 30 Mexican Representatives - and 30 United States Representatives, and will be restricted to those researchers presenting their work and collaborative proposals among Mexican and U.S. institutions. Additionally, there will be a number of plenary presentations given by invited keynote speakers.

    Collaborative Themes:

  • Digital Library architectures
  • Digitization of large collections
  • User interfaces for Digital Libraries
  • Information retrieval mechanisms
  • Collaborative environments
  • Metadata standards
  • Multi-lingual interfaces
  • Social issues
